What is RSS

RSS is like an email inbox for web pages.  RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication”.  Many websites, including this one, publish something called an “RSS Feed”.  This is a special version of the website that is specially formatted to be easily understood by machines.  In the Address Bar at the top of your browser, you will often see an orange or blue logo that looks similar to this: RSS Logo, firefox-rss or safari-rss. This logo indicates that there is an RSS feed available for the site you are visiting.

How to Get Started with RSS

To use RSS, you need two components: an RSS Reader, and at least one RSS feed.

At Telematics Weekly, we use and recommend the News Gator RSS readers. They have RSS Readers for PCs, Macs, iPhones, and other smart phones. If you have News Gator RSS readers installed on different machines, they will automatically keep synchronized with each other.

Once you have your RSS reader installed, go to the website whose feed you want to add, and click on the RSS logo in the address bar. (To subscribe to our feeds, you can click on these links for our news or show feeds.) From here you should be able to either select your RSS reader and have the feed added automatically, or copy the feed’s URL and go directly to your RSS reader to add the feed directly.

You can also subscribe to the show RSS feed for automatic syncing with your MP3 player. If you have an iPod or iPhone, it is easiest to go directly to iTunes and subscribe there. If you use another type of MP3 player, you will likely be able to add a “podcast” feed through their software.
