Government-controlled Qtel Telecom has capitalised on its lucrative monopolist position in Qatar to expand aggressively abroad, with acquisitions including a 52.5 per cent holding in Kuwait’s Wataniya Telecom for $4.2bn and a major stake in PT Indosat, Indonesia’s second-largest telecoms provider for $1.8bn last year. Qtel, which has set a goal to be one of the 20 largest telecoms providers in the world by 2020, expects to announce the pricing of the initial $1bn tranche on Monday, which will be partially used to settle a revolving $600m credit facility that falls due in September, a source close to the deal said.
